What is Myers-Briggs Type Indicator?

What is Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test? As per psychotherapists in India, they conduct the test to determine a person’s personality. The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is made to recognise a person’s strengths, and preferences. Have you ever heard someone describe themselves as an INTJ or an ESTP and wondered what those cryptic-sounding letters could mean? What these folks are referring to is their character type or personality depending on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

Today, the MBTI inventory is among the most widely used psychological tools in the world. Organisations use Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to understand the personality type of an individual before hiring. This helps businesses to recruit the right resources for the job, thereby increase productivity and reduce employee turnover. Individuals take up the MBTI to understand their personality type, strengths and preferences so that they could pick the right job best suited for them. MBTI is widely used in therapy, coaching and counselling to understand more about the personality type fo the person.

The Development of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

During World War II, Myers and Briggs began researching and developing an indicator that could be utilised to help understand individual differences. Myers and Briggs thought they might help people pick occupations that were best suited to their own personality types and direct healthier, happier lives. Myers made the very first pen-and-pencil variant of the inventory during the 1940s, and the two girls began testing the evaluation on friends and loved ones. They continued to fully develop the tool during the next two decades.

An Overview of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test

Depending on the responses to the questions on the given, people are identified as having one of 16 personality types. The target of the MBTI is to permit respondents to further explore and understand their own characters, such as their likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, possible career preferences, and compatibility with different people. No one’s personality type is”best” or”better” than any other one. It is not a tool to look for dysfunction or abnormality. Rather, its aim is just to help you learn more on your own self.

The questionnaire itself has four different scales:

Extraversion (E) – Introversion (I)

The first in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is extraversion. The extraversion-introversion dichotomy was first researched by Jung in His theory of personality types as a means to describe how folks respond and interact with the world around them. When these terms are familiar to most people, the manner in which one employs here differs somewhat from their popular use.

Extraverts (also frequently spelt Enjoy more frequent social interaction, and feel energised after spending some time With different people. Introverts are”inward-turning” and tend to be Thought-oriented, enjoy profound and meaningful social interactions, and feel Recharged after spending some time alone. We all exhibit extraversion and Introversion to some degree, but the majority of us often get an overall preference for One or another.

Sensing (S) – Intuition (N)

The second in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is Sensing. This scale entails looking at how people gather information from the world about them. Just like using extraversion and introversion, every one spend some time sensing ( feeling) and intuiting based upon the situation. As stated by the MBTI, folks tend to be dominant in one place or the other.

Individuals who prefer sensing often pay a whole lot of attention to reality, particularly to what they could learn from their own perceptions. They have a tendency to concentrate on details and facts and revel in getting hands-on expertise. People who prefer intuition pay more attention to matters like patterns and impressions. They like thinking about possibilities, imagining the future, and abstract concepts.

Thinking (T) – Feeling (F)

The third in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is thinking. This scale focuses on how folks make decisions based on the data they gathered from their intitutive or sensing functions. People who favor thinking place a greater emphasis on details and objective information. They tend to be consistent, logical, and unbiased when weighing a decision. People who prefer feeling are more inclined to think about people and emotions when arriving at a conclusion.

Judging (J) – Perceiving (P)

The Last scale in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator entails how people tend to take care of the external world. People who lean toward judging prefer more of structure and firm decisions. People who lean toward perceiving are somewhat more receptive, flexible, and adaptable. Both of these tendencies interact with the other scales. Bear in mind, all people at least spend a while extraverting. The Judging-perceiving scale helps describe whether you extravert when you’re taking in new information (sensing and intuiting) or even whenever you are making decisions (thinking and feeling).

Each type is then listed by its four-letter code:

  1. ISTJ – The Inspector
  2. ISTP – The Crafter
  3. ISFJ – The Protector
  4. ISFP – The Artist
  5. INFJ – The Advocate
  6. INFP – The Mediator
  7. INTJ – The Architect
  8. INTP – The Thinker
  9. ESTP – The Persuader
  10. ESTJ – The Director
  11. ESFP – The Performer
  12. ESFJ – The Caregiver
  13. ENFP – The Champion
  14. ENFJ – The Giver
  15. ENTP – The Debater
  16. ENTJ – The Commander

Taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can provide a Great Deal of insight into your character, which is probably Why the tool has become so hugely popular. Even without taking the formal questionnaire, you may most likely immediately recognise some of these tendencies in yourself.

How Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Differs From Other Personality Instruments

First, the MBTI is not really a “test.” There are no right or wrong answers and one type is not better than any other type. The purpose of the indicator is not to evaluate mental health or offer any type of diagnosis. Also, unlike many other types of psychological evaluations, psychotherapists in Chennai, India don’t compare your results against any norms. Instead of looking at your score in comparison to the results of other people, the goal of the instrument is to simply offer further information about your own unique personality.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test Today

Because the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is relatively easy to use, it has become one of the most prevalent psychological instruments currently in use today. Approximately twelve million adults complete the inventory each year. While There Are Lots of Variations of MBTI available online, it must be mentioned that some of those casual questionnaires you might find on the web are just approximations of the actual thing. So, these days, one conducts the questionnaire online through different automated tools. Therefore, this also involves getting an expert interpretation of your results. Trained and competent psychotherapists in India handle the actual MBTI that comprises a follow-up of their outcomes.

The present version of this Myers-Briggs Type Indicator comprises 93 forced-choice queries in the North American variant and 88 forced-choice queries in the European edition. For each query, you will find two distinct choices where the respondent must select.
