Counselling For Abuse by Praveen Saanker

What is Abuse? Abuse is any behaviour that causes intentional harm or upset to a known or an unknown person. In addition, abuse can have numerous forms, such as domestic violence, child abuse, and emotional abuse. Abusive behaviour has a significant effect on our inner peace and well-being. The impact may not be visible immediately but can have long-lasting effects throughout a person’s life. We will now explore the various types of abuse and even look at some common signs. We will cover the importance of counselling for abuse in depth. In addition, we will also explore the role of top counselling psychologists in India in resolving your issues.

Types of abuse

As mentioned above, abuse can come in multiple forms. Hence, to be aware of these types is imperative.

Physical abuse

Physical abuse is causing deliberate harm or suffering to another person through physical contact. Anyone and everyone can be a victim of this. In addition, the abuser can be a person you know or an unknown person, the victim. But usually, it’s an identified person.

Physical abuse can include:

  • scratching
  • burning
  • hitting
  • biting
  • choking
  • sexual assault

Often, people think that injury is not the only effect. At times, victims may feel embarrassed or guilty about what happened to them and hide it. Tremendous fear can stop people from reaching out to famous psychotherapists in India and suffer alone. Because of this, physical abuse is often not reported.

Emotional abuse

Unlike physical, emotional abuse is hard to identify as there are no noticeable marks left on the victim. Therefore the abuser feels more powerful in this form.

Typically, emotional abuse is:

  1. Aggressive: This can include name-calling, blaming, accusing, and making threats or destructive criticism.
  2. Denying: This can include manipulation, neglecting, withholding affection.
  3. Minimising: This can include belittling the victim’s feelings or thoughts, isolation, or accusing them of exaggerating.

It’s essential to understand the difference between conflict or criticism and emotional abuse. Disputes or disagreements are healthy ways of dealing with situations.

Sexual abuse

The term sexual abuse has evolved. Initially, it used only to mean unwanted touching. However, with time, it also includes unwanted photographing or someone pressurising to do a sexual act. Also, most of the victims know their abuser. It could be a family member, or a relative, or even a partner.

A common myth is that men do not suffer from abuse, which is entirely false. Absolutely anyone can be a sufferer of this. Everyone reacts differently, and the effects of abuse may occur even on their behaviours. It may include severe panic attacks, intense fear, very low-self esteem, and depression.

Working with an experienced counsellor or famous psychotherapist in Chennai is a significant step. They will help you to accept the event and help you move on with your life. A counsellor or a therapist trained in sexual abuse will ideally understand your experience and support you in your life.

Domestic violence

Domestic violence is an event of threatening behaviour or violence between two people who are, or have been, in a relationship. The abuser does it to maintain its control of authority or power over another person. Domestic abuse is not restricted to a particular gender. The abusive behaviour may be sexual, emotional, physical, or psychological.

Research and surveys have discovered that domestic abuse is a common phenomenon in India. As per recent National Statistics, overall, 47.1% of women have experienced some abuse. Similarly, nearly 21.2% of men have experienced any category of domestic abuse.

Well, your heart is valuable, so take care of it. Do not let anyone in and destroy you. Domestic abuse shouldn’t be something we should live with.

For more information about domestic violence, including recognising the signs and moving on from abuse, visit the top psychologist in Chennai.

Child abuse

Thousands of children face abuse every year physically by a parent or someone they know. It is any action that could harm a child’s mental or physical health. In addition, research is proof that many aggressors were themselves the victim of abuse as a child.

The crucial areas of child abuse are the following:

  • physical
  • sexual
  • emotional
  • exploitation
  • neglect

At times, people reside with the consequences of an event that happened in their childhood. This trauma could be even stronger if they didn’t seek support. Talking about these sensitive issues with a professional or a top counselling psychologist in India can help you process them. It could help to address them from the root cause so that they never resurface later.

How can counselling help?

Emotional support is a must to all those who have experienced abuse in whichever form. However, everyone likes or enjoys support in different ways. While some may have a network of friends, they lean on, whereas others may find it easier to speak to their loved ones.

It can be helpful to seek support from a counsellor or a top abuse counselling psychologist in Chennai, India. This support is essential for you to escape from this vicious cycle of powerlessness. You deserve a hearing without being judged, and this is the best opportunity for you. Counselling offers you a safe space to talk without fear and judgment. Your therapist can listen to you, help you come to terms with what has happened, and understand your options for moving forward.

No matter how difficult the stage you are at, counselling for abuse can benefit you numerous ways. It can act as an aid if you are in the procedure of vacating from an abusive relationship. Eventually, it would restore your self-esteem and be happy in your being.

Recognising the signs of abuse

It is a susceptible subject for anyone to handle. No matter the nature of the damage or the person who caused it, it is very tough. Therefore, detecting the indications is crucial to help them figure out the proper support. Most of the tomes older people or disabled people are more likely to be abused or neglected. They may be recognised as an easy victim and may be less likely to identify or report it.

An abuser’s background often has a history, or they may have themselves been victims in the past. No matter what the reason is, this behaviour is unacceptable. No one has the right to do this to anyone, and if you suspect this anywhere, try reporting it to a top counselling psychologist in India first.

Abuse is something that surfaces slowly. It starts with small things and later gets intense. Control is one of the central traits of an abusive relationship. They try to achieve this control by force or manipulation. If you doubt that a connection has become excessively controlling, be there for them and enable them to find the proper support.

What is coercive behaviour?

Coercive behaviour is a pattern of acts of intimidation, assault, or humiliation. This form of behaviour is used to harm or punish the victim. If you think your friend or family member or someone you know is being abused, help them. You can begin by asking them about how they are doing. Initially, the individual may not be willing to open up to you. However, the simple thought that they have support will make them feel comfortable. You could also go with him/her to a famous psychotherapist.

What should I be looking for in Counselling for Abuse?

Presently, there are no rules or regulations or laws stipulating the status of training a counsellor needs. However, please examine whether your psychotherapist has experience in this field. A post-graduate diploma level credentials or equivalent in counselling for abuse will provide you that your counsellor has the necessary skills. This is apart from the essential psychology degree that is required. Another way to be sure is to see any signs of specialist training. Also, if they belong to a pertinent professional organisation representing counsellors dealing with Abuse related issues, it would build confidence.
