ADHD Therapy

What is ADHD? To start, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is an acronym for ADHD. It is a condition wherein people feel impatient, impulsive, and hyperactive. These symptoms usually can be seen in one’s childhood since one strive to concentrate for an extended period. ADHD is a condition generally detected in children and teenagers. However, it can also affect adults. We will now look into the kinds of ADHD, its symptoms, the treatment for ADHD, and the role of a top psychotherapist in India.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a kind of behaviour disorder, which can make daily life tough. Some of the primary symptoms encompass restlessness, hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsiveness. These are such indications that can be quickly glanced at at an early age.

The majority of the time, these symptoms get better with age. But sometimes, even the adults persist in struggling. They are left to deal with such things on their own if the diagnosis isn’t made early. Hence, it’s best to visit a top psychotherapist in Chennai, India, if something’s wrong.

There are three types of ADHD:

The three kinds are:

  1. Inattentive presentation:- when there is more inattention than hyperactivity seen
  2. Hyperactive-impulsive:- when there are more hyperactivity and impulsiveness seen
  3. Combined hyperactive-impulsive and careless: This is when six or more indications are present, from inattentiveness or hyperactivity.

Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive is the most widespread type of ADHD seen by doctors.

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) was a term used in the past, and presently it is no longer used. The norms for ADHD were altered to include the three subtypes. These subtypes are described above.

ADHD symptoms in adults

There is limited research done in adults concerning ADHD. It is usually believed that the condition always has in one’s childhood. However, at times, symptoms may have been missed.

ADHD tends to affect adults in a more subtle manner. Some symptoms that may be detected in adults include:

  1. Lack of attention to detail
  2. Starting new tasks before finishing existing ones
  3. Poor organizational skills
  4. Difficulty in prioritizing
  5. Misplacing things
  6. Often forgetting things
  7. Restlessness
  8. Interrupting other people’s conversations
  9. Mood swings and irritability
  10. Difficulty coping with stress
  11. Impatience
  12. Risky behaviour

Adults with ADHD can also develop other conditions, including personality disorders, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Causes of ADHD

There is no single cause of ADHD. It is a variety of factors that contribute to this condition. Sometimes, it is the genes you inherit from your parents that can play a significant role. Hence, how one inherits ADHD is very complicated.

Exciting research has shown that differences in the brain could be a potent factor responsible for ADHD’s cause. For example, those with the condition have minor areas in certain parts of the brain.

Specific categories have an increased risk of developing ADHD. For example, those born prematurely or with low birth weight, those with epilepsy, and brain damage. If you seem to be one of those, don’t hesitate to contact the best psychotherapist in Chennai, India.

Getting a diagnosis

If you have even the slightest doubt, it’s always better to get a diagnosis for your child or colleague. However, your initial step should be to see your famous psychotherapist in India. Then only can you look for the right treatment for ADHD. Although they cannot formally diagnose ADHD, they are better positioned to refer you to the right specialist.

Initially, they generally suggest a duration of ‘watchful waiting.’ This is usually 10 weeks to keep an eye on the symptoms and note if any improvement. Depending on the case, they may also propose ADHD-focused parent training. This is more like training the patient’s parents or guardians to support you and handle you better.

If, after this period, they conclude that the behaviour hasn’t improved, they refer you to an expert for further assessment. Sometimes, you can explain your symptoms by another mental health condition.

Treatment for ADHD

Treatment for ADHD usually involves medication or therapy, or a combination of the two. This is as per the situation. Getting the right support from a top psychotherapist in India can help alleviate symptoms and make daily tasks easier.

1. Medication

To treat ADHD, there are various types of medications that can be used. Most people misunderstand these medications to be the ultimate cure. Still, they can help with the condition to reduce the impact. It enables one to concentrate better and feel calmer.

2. Therapy

Numerous therapies can be beneficial for those with ADHD. Not only this, but they can also help with additional complications such as anxiety. Some suggested treatments are:

3. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT is a kind of talking therapy that helps you change the way you think and behave. This ultimately leads to better skills in solving problems. CBT is also an incredible way to help with associated anxiety.

4. Behaviour therapy

Behaviour therapy delivers support for parents or caretakers of children. It could even involve school or college teachers. The aim is to enable behaviour management with the help of a reward system.

Training and education

If your kid has ADHD, your doctor may propose specific education and training programs. This is not just for the kid but for both of y’all. These typically include:

Psychoeducation – This is a practice that encourages you or your child to speak about ADHD. However, the goal is to assist people in understanding the disorder and how they can cope with the symptoms.

Parent training and education programs – These programs are specially designed for the parents. Here, they learn various ways of talking and playing with their child to improve their attention and behaviour.

Social skills training – This is a unique program wherein the children learn how to behave in a social situation. It uses role-play and innovative training means. It also includes comprehending how their behaviour can affect others.

What should I be looking for in a counsellor or psychotherapist?

There are presently no laws or rules stipulating the level of training a counsellor must have. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has formulated several approaches and guidelines for the recommended treatments:

If your child is old enough to go to school, avoid trying to use any medications. Sometimes even attending a course of group treatment, such as psychological therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), or social skills training, can show great results.

If your child is a teenager, a one-to-one conversation with a top psychotherapist in India can be a great treatment for ADHD.  If the treatment has not helped in any way, only then your child should be assigned medication. However, the drug shouldn’t be the only resort. It should be alongside other support and treatment. If you and your child prefer not to attend a course for parents or have psychological therapy, medication is the best way out.

Counsellors treating people with ADHD must have experience since they may have to adjust the way they work.
