Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy focuses on those suffering from shame on self-criticism that arises from early abuse or neglect. CFT helps individuals learn self-compassion and compassion skills that will help them feel safe and comfortable. The goal of CFT is to help individuals regulate mood and accept themselves with the help of a psychologist in Chennai. This form of therapy is similar to Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, which helps individuals learn the mind-body connection.

The use of CFT or Compassion Focused Therapy.

Compassion-focused therapy has been effectively used to treat anxiety disorder, personality disorders, mood disorders, hoarding disorders, eating disorders, and even psychosis. It addresses shame and self-criticism, which leads to particular emotional turbulence.

Humans have been found to have three emotion regulating processes which are as follows:

  • Threat and self-protection system that leads to fear, disgust, and anger.
  • Drive and excitement system that leads to seeking external resources like food and mate.
  • The soothing and social system activates when we feel comfortable enough to not look out for external resources.

An imbalance between these three systems will lead to mental disorders. People high in self-criticism and shame have not achieved enough activation of soothing and social systems during early stages and higher activation of the threat and self-protection system. This makes it difficult for them to be kind to themselves or receive kindness. Hence, making them very sensitive to criticism that they receive or perceive. The main goal of CFT done by a famous psychologist in Chennai is to restore the balance between these systems and help the person feel better about themselves.

Expectation from Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion Focussed Therapy can be conducted either in a group or in an individual setting with the final goal of cultivating kindness for the self and others. Famous psychotherapists generally begin with teaching the brain’s structure, the construction of self, and how to regulate emotion.

A psychotherapist in Chennai may then teach the group mindfulness and compassion towards self and others. Patients then receive homework from practising these skills.

The Workings of Compassion Focused Therapy

Psychologist Paul Gilbert developed Compassion Focussed Therapy. He developed this particular strategy of therapy to address self-criticism and shame. The roots of this strategy are layered in evolutionary, developmental, social, and Buddhist psychology and neuroscience.

Self-criticism and shame generally arise from early neglect, bullying, and abuse. Such individuals always feel threatened that their external and internal realities are under immediate hostility. According to Gilbert, internal hostility and fear of external rejection can “literally harass” people into developing severe disorders like depression and anxiety.

Compassion Focused Therapy is somewhat similar to therapy strategies for treating trauma as it takes into account early memories, corrects the misperceptions, and recognize negative thoughts. However, for some people suffering from self-criticism, a simple correction of misperception is not enough—the need to learn self-compassion to feel better ultimately.

With the help of CFT, therapists transform negative emotions and self-hatred into understanding and compassion. This helps the client to suit themselves and accept kindness from others. Hence, motivating them to feel safe and content with themselves and the environment.

Qualities To Look For In a Therapist

When choosing a therapist among famous psychotherapists, make sure they have a license and particular training in CFT. It would help if you considered a famous psychologist in Chennai who has guidance and training in CFT and supervision. This is apart from the doctoral qualifications in Psychology. International organizations like the Center for Compassion Focused Therapy organizes workshop on the therapy, but no formal certification is available. You must also make sure that you are comfortable with the therapist of your choosing.
